Brownfield Cleanups

The Agency, in partnership with the Housing Authorities received a $200,000 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hazardous substance cleanup grant in February 2009 to fund the cleanup of the brownfield (former auto dismantling yard) located at 317 West California. This two-acre brownfield site, containing lead contaminants on the ground surface, is an Agency property, which after cleanup, will be incorporated into the Hope VI Project.

The total cleanup work is estimated at $285,000, of which $85,000 will be funded by the Agency. The cleanup work of the site is estimated to be completed by the end of summer 2010.

The Agency in partnership with the Housing Authorities is remediating a contaminated site (brownfield) which was a former gas station in the 1950s and 1960s at 437 West California Avenue. This approximately two-acre brownfield site will also be incorporated into the Hope VI Project. The cleanup is being funded with State and Federal grants obtained by the Housing Authority. The Agency is supporting the cleanup effort by providing engineering personnel responsible for managing the cleanup work.
